SWPL Announcements

Welcome To Practical Pistol Shooting!
The Southwest Pistol League is one of the originators of Practical or Action Pistol Shooting. Each month, SWPL presents a USPSA-format match open to members of all the clubs and to the general public. Unlike traditional target shooting, where competitors stand sedately at a line and take careful aim at paper bullseye targets, action pistol competitors draw from a holster or pluck a handgun from a table, then walk, run, crawl, dive, zig, zag, climb and race through varying and challenging courses to hit cardboard and steel targets. Those targets can be obscured, hidden, or moving. There is no single way that targets can be engaged, since it's entirely up to each competitor how to complete a course. And, there's reloading. A lot of reloading. As long as all safety rules (to protect competitors, officials, and observers) are followed, anything goes. Don't forget that reloading. If hitting the targets wasn't enough...it's all timed! If you haven't tried action pistol shooting before, it's an entirely different game. Give it a spin! You'll need a revolver or semiauto handgun, a holster, spare magazines, moon clips, or speedloaders...and lots of ammo!

LOCATION:
You'll find the matches at the Lower Ranges of The Gopher Flats Sportsman's Club. These are the first set of ranges, on the right-hand side of the access road. Enter the gate and park between the pistol berms and the sign-up area. If you reach the cardkey gate at the end of the access road, you've passed the Lower Ranges.

For Detailed Directions To The Match

AMENITIES:
There are separate restrooms for Men and Women, running water, a covered registration/dining area, and electrical outlets.

FOOD & BEVERAGES:
Each month, SWPL Grill Master Mike "Uncle Mike" Agoncillo dishes-up his famously savory Pork Skewers and other delectable BBQ entrees. These are served throughout the match, along with icy cold Bottled Water, Gatorade, and Soft Drinks. Stop by for a between-stages snack, a belly filling apres'-match meal, or just to talk guns with Mike and your fellow competitors.

START & END TIMES:
As always, once registration opens (usually before 8:00 am) you are more than welcome to start shooting. Due to time constraints, stage tear-down starts at 1:00 pm. If you plan to arrive late or if you run stages in an exceptionally leisurely manner...um, shoot fast. All the stages are broken-down and every piece of gear stowed after each match, which requires quite a bit of time. So, please help the match crew and your fellow competitors by moving through the stages as quickly (and safely!) as possible.

MATCH FEE:
$30.00

LAST MINUTE UPDATES & MATCH CANCELLATIONS:
Please check this site for any schedule changes, supplemental matches, or match results. While the Gopher Flats USPSA crew is a hardy bunch, who sneer at weather extremes, sometimes Mother Nature has the upper hand. During the rainy season and especially when the Weather Service issues Red Flag (brushfire) Warnings, check the SWPL Announcements on Saturday after 6:00 pm www.gopherflats.net
